DNS weirdness

By kevin.schumacher ·
Single domain. Internal DNS, External DNS for DMZ machines.

About every hour, win2k pro machines lose name resolution ability. An nslookup w/ set debug on shows an A record with the correct IP and Name.

An ipconfig /flushdns or ipconfig /renew will get the name resolution working again, but I cant really do that every hour for every machine.

What i dont understand is why it stops working, then will start working either after a renew, or a short wait (10 min).

I did have forwarding set to go to our T1 provider. Sometimes when pinging certain servers, we would get the external DNS pointer, to our firewall, isntead of the local. I removed these forwarders.

Doesn't sound like the DNS service

by Chris.. In reply to more info

Sounds like you need to relook at the DNS configs, you might have an oddball time out. Also are all of the machines Win2k or XP? You might also try rebuilding the DNS config on the internal server. Also ensure that you're DHCP is reg'ing the leases to the DNS server for you.

Mind you a lot of what I'm saying is on the assumption that you're AD enabled.

Here is a solid outside server to use for Fowarders.

4.2.2.1

I think it is a Verizon server, and I use it at all three of my sites. Haven't had an issue with it in the 6 months I've used it.
