Do you use windows ME??

by Joseph Moore In reply to Do you use windows ME??

I truly dislike the entire Win9x line, and that includes ME! Yes, Win95 was revolutionary (well, sort of, if you had never used a Mac!) in 1995! But to keep using that unstable, admin-unfriendly, difficult to fix OS in the world of the NT kernel (and Linux, I must admit!) is foolish!
If you want to stick with a Microsoft product, I recommend Win2KPro over XPPro (I do not like XPHome at all, due to its limitations). Yes, a lot of software does not work on Win2K. I tell people to deal with it, and find alternatives!

"How do you find WindowsME. "

I DESPISE it.

"Please give me an idea (rate 1-10)"

If 1 is worst, a 1.

"You tech ability (10 being MCSE, or equivelent, qualified and extensively experienced)"

Around a 7, I'd suppose. I'm no sysadmin, butI am an experienced user of Win9x and 2000Pro.

"You system: "
processor - P3 900MhZ
RAM - 256 (had to add 128 from factory to get the stupid thing to not crash so much)

"Windows ME:
Ease of use. "

Oh, it is somewhat user friendly. A moron could use it. People with brains, however, can't do half what they'd like without many tweak utilities.

"Secure. "

HAHAHA
I added a firewall and disabled all the windows open ports and sharing and netBIOS, etc.
It's secure now. :)

"Crashes (1 being continuouse crashes) "
Every day, sometimes right when I start up.

"Any other comments: "

It's horrid. Horrid, horrid, horrid. And my HP has so much proprietary gsarbage putting a fresh install of Win2K with all the right drivers is nearly impossible. Someday I'll try it again, if I have several days free. I have to get over the stress from the first attempt.

Never again. And never again a HP, either. Proprietary drivers <grumble>...

HORRIBLE. The worst product MS has released since Bob *snicker*

Please give me an idea (rate 1-10)

I'd give it a 2...and that's probably generous.

You tech ability (10 being MCSE, or equivelent, qualified and extensively experienced)

I'm a CNE, CCA and working on my CCNA.

You system:
Many...but I fortunately no longer run ME on any of them. I last ran it on my laptop, but have never regretted upgrading it to Win2k Pro...

Windows ME:

Ease of use.

The interface looks okay...it's just has a lot of issues. I can honestly say I prefer 98SE...but Win2k and XP are simply in another class. I hope to rid myself of all 9x products soon.

Friendlyness of operating system.

This is what I hate most. It seems to have glitches and annoying quirks all over the place.

Customizable. Yes...quite customizable, but most everything is these days.

Secure. Not at all....zip. nada.

Crashes (1 being continuouse crashes) I'd say 3. Not constant crashes (I'm pretty meticulous in setting up my systems), but it ran less stably for me than any of the other systems I have at home (which include XP, 2k, Netware 5.0, Solaris 7.0, Linux 7.2, NT 4 (Dec Alpha), 98SE and MacOS 8.6)

Any other comments:

Avoid this dog....please. XP and 2k probably require a little more skill to set up and use, but you'll never regret it. Trust me. If you need games and that's a focus of what you do on the machine, I'd take 98SE over ME. My experience with it has rarely been good at all. I think I liked it for the first couple of hours I was exposed to it. Ever since....I've wanted rid of it.

I love WinME, but before I say anymore. If your just going to use like a everyday user it's a fine system.
If you plan on making changes to it a lot, such as tweaking it, you better know what your doing or you'll have neverending problems.
The ones that have problems with ME are usually the ones who shouldn't be tweaking it anyway because they don't know what their doing.

My ability 8 1/2+
PIII800
768MB of SDRAM
ASUS MB
See above for most of your other questions, it's secure when running Antivirus & firewall same as all systems. In the two years I've been using, it rarely crashes if it does it's my fault anyway.
