Can I rename a BDC’s computer name and give it a new IP address without reinstalling NT?

    How about a PDC?

Yes, the computer name is just its Netbios name. The Security descriptor doesnt change though. The IP address can also be changed. You will have to make sure you make the appropriate changes within server manager though.

yes in order to do this what you have to do is:

      1. create a new server computer account using server manager, this account being the new name.

      2. sync your domain so that this account is replicated to all bdc’s.

      3. go into the network properties of your bdc and then change the computer name to the name in step 1 you will then need to reboot.

once the bdc has rebooted its name will be changed. change the ip address from network properties. if your workstations are using a host file or lmhosts file to access this server these will need changing.

in order to rename a pdc you forst will need to promote another bdc to a pdc using server manager. once this is done perform the above steps. when the name change is successful promotethe newly renamed bdc back to the pdc.

Yes you can do as the previous answer, but what about your users. If you have shared resourses on your servers and login scripts these will have to be renamed along with drive mappings for your users. I would need a very good reason to change the name of any server.
