Domain field missing every Monday

By Abe Froman ·
Every Monday morning, 2 of my users boot their Win 98 computers and do not get the domain field listed on their login screen. After several reboots, the field appears and they are able to login to the network. They both get their IP address from aDHCP server and they are reserved just for them. This apparently begun happening when their office area was condensed down from 5 mini-hubs (one in each cube) to 1. Each computer is now connected to its own port in their own cubes. Anyone seen this before and have a solution?

Sometimes when Windows boots up and cannot see the network, no Domain Name field will appear. This could happen because of faulty wiring, faulty NIC, or not receiving IP. You had mentioned that the have their own IP reserved for them on a DHCP server. If this is the case, then you need to take care to EXCLUDE those IPs reserved for the users out of the IP range. If this is not done, and the users with the assigned IPs log on, there is a greater chance that someone else on the network has already taken their IPs. If they MUST have their own IPs, you MUST make sure that they are excluded from the range.

Good Luck

I think it would be a good idea to remove and then reinstall Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP, any corruption in these will cause problems. It doesn't take very long to do and is definitely worth a try anyway.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that this was one of the first things we tried 5 weeks ago when this began. Unfortunately, it didn't work, but I have seen it work in the past.

Thanks for the input.
