    domain.local Vs WORKGROUP/HOME Network

    Locked

    by melissam1979 ·

    Good Afternoon All,

I have users on laptops, at work they are connected to domain.local. When they get home, they login using their domain username/password onto the local machine. But they cannot access the internet via DNS names. They can however, ping google’s IP address and browse using IP addresses. But if they try to ping google.com.au or put google.com.au into any web browser, it goes no-where. Can anyone help?
We are running Windows XP Pro with SP2

Are these notebooks set to use static IP addresses for DNS servers or are they configured to accept the DNS server information from the DHCP server? It sounds like the DNS server information is set incorrectly or not at all.

The conditions you describe are exactly what would happen if your system couldn’t contact a DNS server in the process of resolving URLs to their IP addresses.
      Try this:
      – Open a DOS box
      – Type:
      Ping 64.233.167.99

      And then:
      Ping http://www.google.com
If the first works, but the second doesn’t (both pings should reach Google), check the DNS server IP entries in your TCP/IP properties and make sure the IPs are present and correct.
Are there any other things to take into consideration such as Satellite connection at one or more of the sites?
You can also try setting up alternate configuration in the TCP/IP options designed for use with computers connecting to more than one network.
Are these Vista machines? If so are they set up to use IPv6 only?
