DOS prompt window causes "device being u

By al ·
I've seen this from time-to-time on Win95 and now have a Win98 PC with the same problem. When the MS-DOS Prompt is opened, either in full-screen or Window mode, it pops up the following message:

"This application attempted to access a device thatis being used by another application." It asks if you want to continue and when you respond Yes, the DOS session seems to be fine. It will only happen on the first occurrance of multiple DOS sessions. But if you open a DOS session, repond Yes to the error, close it and open another one, you get the error again.

Things I've tried that didn't work: removing Anti-virus software, disabling network card.

Check all the running programs, they may interfere, though I never saw a thing myself.
To check, press Ctrl-Alt-Del and check the list, if you can find something that interferes with HD or COMMAND.COM activity.
places for startup-run programs :
files:c:\_windows_directory_\win.ini - "load=" and "run=" lines.
registry :
LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run,runonce, etc.
CURRENT_USER\....the....same......
and - Startup folder in Programs menu..

This could have something to do with a com port. Maybe your mous is connected to a com port? Is your DOS Window trying to load the driver for your mous again? Try disabling your mous in the batch files (also autoexec.bat) so it isn't loaded separately for DOS.
Hope this helps,
Markus

I've seem similair problems like this happen in windows when a file was created and saved to the floppy drive. Everytime after that, if you clicked on the file or the application that created it, it would access the floppy even though there's no floppy in the drive. This may be a similiar problem. Try removing all the files from the recent folder in windows. Also check to see if the executable for the ms-dos prompt became corrupt. Edit the file and see if some attached itself to the file. Extract it fromthe cab files on the 98 cd and replace the exsisting one to see if that takes care of the problem.

Ok, Ive seen this before, and the main reason MINE does this is because my sound card is being used by another application, and undourtunately, it can only support 1 program at a time, try closing out any windows that could possibly be using a soundcard.... If thats your problem, other than that, you may have to give a little more information, like what are you trying to open, whats in common, etc
