Download XP Updates

By aaa_ ·
Is there anyway to save XP updates/ downloads to my computer so that the next time I format my hard disk, I don't need to repeat the process all over again?

I keep my back up on DVD, and can reload them completely and quickly. Unfortunatly a new install will still require the updates, and the last one I did took longer to do the updates than the install itself. I've not seen any way to do what you want, as the updates are applied to the base install as they are downloaded.

Check the link, explains how to download them all instead of using automatic update

Instead of running Windows Update, use the Windows Update Catalog to download your updates:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/

Save and back up all of the updates and then you can install them when you need to.

You could run Windows Update to get a list of the updates your specific PC needs, then go to the catalog and download just your updates.

You can also click on the more information link of each update when you review the list of updates that Windows Update generates and follow the link to manually download the update.

Just remember to install the updates in release date order so that an old update does not overwrite a newer update.

I save all Microsoft updates because I support a number of computer users who have only a dial-up connection.

I prefer to build them into my install media so they're already installed. There are a couple of ways to do this. I like NLite because it also allows you to remove Windows components. Check out http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html

There's a bit of work in getting started with custom install media but it?s quite useful. I use customized XP media to make sure I don't have to spend a lot of time updating Windows after reinstalling the OS on a customer's PC and I have another CD I use for my own machines to save the hassles of ripping out extraneous stuff I never use. Once you start using one of these, you?ll never want to go back so make sure you have a backup of them. ;-)
