    Downloading and installingAIM

    Locked

    by shanghai sam ·

Somehow my daughter screwed up our AIM messenger. We think it happened during upgrage. I uninstalled and reinstalled and to no avail. When I install it, and click to open it it puts the little icon down on my taskbar but won’t open then icon disappears. Any idea. I then upgraded Netscape to the new one which I don’t like and have that messenger, but it isn’t the same. I would like to go back to my older netscape and get her her original messenger back. Thanks

      How to Uninstall Netscape

NOTE: If you installed Netscape 6 over a previous version of Netscape 4.7x, this process will return your computer to that version. If you received a computer with Netscape 6 pre-installed or you removed Netscape 4.7x before installing Netscape 6, go to the Download Software page and copy the Netscape download file to your hard drive. Then, you can install Netscape Communicator 4.74 when you finish this process.

      To uninstall Netscape:

Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.

At the Control Panel screen, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

At the Add/Remove Programs screen, browse through the list of currently installed programs. Click on Netscape 6 to highlight it and then click the Change/Remove button.

A Netscape Uninstaller dialog box is displayed. Click Uninstall.

Click Close to close the Add/Remove Programs screen.

        Netscape 6.01

        Patch applies to:
        Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000

        Requirements
        Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000

        File Size
        0.3MB

        File Name
        N6Setup.exe

        Author/Supplier
        Netscape

        Description
Netscape 6.01 (includes Netscape Navigator) includes the new Navigator browser, improved download options, email, WinAmp, AOL instant messenger and a host of other internet goodies. When 6 appeared, it was very buggy and many of the problems have been fixed in 6.01. In case you are wondering what happened to Netscape Communicator 5 – there isn’t one! Netscape skipped from 4.76 to 6. Basically they fell so far behind Microsoft that, in order to compete, they decided to beat Microsoft to version 6 (Netscape 4 was originally released in 1997 at the same time as Internet Explorer 4, but IE5 appeared in early 99 and now dominates the market for Windows users).

        Which version should you download?
There are two ways you can download Netscape Communicator. If you select this active download, you will first download a small file that then manage the rest of download and installation process. This is good for users who are not used to pulling down 30MB files. This disadvantages are that more errors can occur, and the troubleshooting can be difficult. Also there is no way of backing up the download, so if you need to reinstall Netscape, then you will have to go through the whole process again. The larger full version download is generally easier to download ifyou have a fast connection or are using a download manager like GetRight or Gozilla, plus you can back up the file for use in the future. The Software Patch generally advises against active downloads as there too many things that can go wrong.

There is another option, and hopefully its not too obscure to help you. You did not mention what operating system you are using, but I do know that this comes into play when using the instant message clients of any type. Yahoo and MSN Messenger are very picky about which versions work with which operating system.

Having said that: If you know what version of AIM you want to reinstall, the ‘easiest’ way short of installing Netscape is to get it off the AOL Install CDs. Yes, it wants to kick into the primary AOL install program (to which you can say no), but there is a subfolder on the CD that contains only the Instant Messenger program.

AOL install is ‘usually’ good at recognizing your operating system and installing the right version (except for 16-bit Windows 3.1, as I recall for AIM). If a version 7 or 8 disk will not work, however, you may have to do some looking to get a 5 or 6 disk to get the same version you started with. If you are an AOL customer, you may be able to download it from Keyword: AIM or DOWNLOAD also.
