Downloads from internet

By bigrondotcom ·
When I attempt to download a file from the internet it goes well until there is one second (99% complete) left for completion. At this point it stops and freezes. The download never is never completed.

What AntiVirus software are you using?

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Downloads from internet

A/V products usually all scan a download during the actual download process. The file is actually downloaded into a temporary folder, scanned, then released to be copied to the actual download location itself at which time the downloader tells you the download is complete.

If you're canceling the download before the scan process has completed, the file won't ever be 'moved' to the designated download folder.

Are you using any form of Download Manager ?...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to Downloads from internet

Come to that - what browser are you using to access the internet?

What size are these downloads (because it's odd to refer to the remaining 1% as 'one second').

What type of file are you trying to download?

Well - You are not alone with this problem ...

I'd go with the various 'solutions' that worked for others suffering from the same symptoms.

#1 Check your disk fragmentation
#2 Check the antivirus regime (again!)
#3 If using it, uninstall IE8. Even if you elect to use an alternative browser I'd still get rid of IE8.
#4 Check to ascertain that you DEFINITELY don't have a download manager running in the background.
#5 Try using Firefox instead of IE.

Also, if you have a virus scanner, check the following registry values to make sure they're both set to 1:

HKCU \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Attachments
Value: ScanWithAntiVirus

HKLM \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Attachments
Value: ScanWithAntiVirus

Best of luck :)

What happens if you wait?

by ThumbsUp2 In reply to Download manager

How long are you waiting for it to complete? Are you sure you're not getting too anxious and simply not 'allowing' it to complete? Downloads must actually contact the site you're downloading from and verify the size/content before the 'download complete' action is taken.

Have you checked to see what processes are running while it's sitting at 99% and doesn't 'appear' to be doing anything? Perhaps something is processing the download for you before the download window closes. You DO have it set to close upon completion, right?

Also, have you cleaned your TEMP files lately? Have you cleared your browser cache lately? How much free hard drive space do you have? How much total space on it? How much RAM in the computer? How big is the swap/page file? What version of Windows? What version of the Internet Explorer? What add-ins do you have installed on the browser?

As you can see, there are TONS of things that can cause this behavior. We need more information to be able to help you.
