Drive Letter Replication

By pstanley ·
I am having a problem on my NT Server with one client workstation. The drive letter for one of the shared folders on the file server keeps replicating on the client until all letters of the alphabet are used up. For instance I have a shared serverfolder that is mapped locally to the S: drive. Over the course of several days that folder will continue to automatically map drive letters until I have an endless list from E: to Z:. This is only happening on one workstation so I assume that it is a client issue not a server one, but I am unsure. I am running NT on all workstations.

This is frequently caused by FastFind. Look in the Startup folder of the profiles on that machine and delete FastFind.

I have had problems with FastFind in the past and have already removed it from all my systems.

1. See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q150/6/04.ASP

2. Use the FindFast control panel applet to remove any indices that remain from before you disabled FindFast.

3. A seemingly irrelevant fix that some have claimed resolved the problem: remove unneeded user profiles from the machine.

Amazingly the solution was to delete some old profiles that were hanging around. Thanks for the tip

Does your network have a novell server?

If the answer is yes, then make sure that you disable the script startup in the novell client as this will automatically map drives similiar to what your experiencing.
