Drive letters reassigned

By karenh ·
After upgrading from NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server, my drive letter assignments
are changed around. Previous to the upgrade, NT 4.0 was installed on the C:
drive, miscellaneous application files on the drive and Sql databases on the
G: drive. Now, the previous C: drive is the drive (with Win2000 installed on
it), the previous drive is the E: drive, the previous G: drive is the C: drive
(and the primary partition). CD-rom drive has also changed.

Has anyone else experienced this reassigning of drives? If so, what was the
resolution to the problem.

Thanks,
Karen
.

Thanks for your response but I can't reassign the drive letter for the system volume through Disk Admininistrator (it's now called Disk Management in Win2000).

Karen I had the same problem.
This happen to me several times. How I solved it was to reduce all drives down to the "C" drive then I installed the OS on it and recconected all other drives one at a time.
Windows has a way of grabbing the OS driveas "C" then changing all other drives from there. It can become a real mess. The biggest problems are left in the registry, where old letter assignments have not been changed. I would reduce your machine to a bare bones machine try to reinstall the OS to the drive you want then add other drives one at a time. You may have to reinstall applications if the registry can't find them.
Good Luck
It can be done.
Mike

Thanks, this verified what was happening here and helped me decide my course of action. We've done a clean install with only the C drive partitioned and it went fine.
