Duplicate Floppy Disk Drive That Can't b

By jcschultz ·
Recently My Windows 98 Second Edition is displaying an additional Floppy Disk Drive as drive D:, moving a zip drive and CD-ROM up a drive letter, throwing off my drive mappings. If I delete the floppy disk controller from Device Manager and reboot, the drives return to their normal position -- until I reboot again, then the phantom drive returns. I installed a 2nd floppy drive in the hopes that the phantom drive would become B:, but now I have 3 floppy drives. Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen this happen before, and if I remember correctly, going into your bios, and setting the IDE port of your zip drive to none, and letting the 98 software detect the zip, will cure your problem.

Boot into SAFE MODE. Open Device Manager. Remove all entries under Disk Drives for Floppies. Then remove all Floppy Disk Controller enties. Reboot and allow Windows to redetect these.

It sounds to me like you have BIOS set up with two floppies. It has happened to me once or twice because I moved around through the menus so fast. Remove flopy disk B in BIOS if it is there.

If that is not the case remove you zip disk and uninstall the zip software reboot and hook it back up. Then reinstall your zip software.

Go into your BIOS setup (when you boot up the computer gives you the option to press DEL or ESC) And make sure that you perhical setup does not include a second floppy drive. do this after you have removed you additional floppy drive. You can then reinstall your second floppy drive if you wish
