Duplicate mailbox has suddenly appeared

By shanna ·
BACKGROUND: Running Server 2003, Exchange 2003 (on server side), Windows XP Pro SP2 and Outlook 2003 (on client side)

PROBLEM: I have a staff member who has suddenly had an exact duplicate of his mailbox suddenly appear in his Outlook folder listing. The mailbox is housed on the server (no, it's not in a .PST file), but for some reason it's duplicate has appeared and cannot be deleted.

I have checked the Exchange System Manager and all appears to be in order, there's no duplicate listing in Outlook's Data File Management applet, and there's no difference between either of the 2 mailboxes that show (all folders and contained files are exact).

I have spoken to the user, an investigated myself, and have found no reason that a duplicate should (or could) appear, and there seems to be no way to delete one of the copies.

Does anyone know what may have caused this to happen, and more importantly, can anyone suggest a way to delete the second copy.

All suggestions & assistance are gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is usually caused by a corrupted Outlook profile. There is no actual second copy of the mailbox, it's just a duplicate display in Outlook. I would dump his Outlook profile and create a completely new one.

Hope this helps!

Many thanks for the input, curlergirl... I appreciate it. I was actually thinking the same thing, but the user has a ton of menu bar customizations, .PST folder links, rules, and calendars and I was hoping not to go to such a drastic step such as deleting his profile and risking losing those.

It may come to that though. If it does, and it is the only fix that works, I'll make sure to give you the points.

Thanks again for your input. Ciao!

Did it reset settings?

Aloha,

I have the same issue and I like the resolution. The question I have is: Did changing the profile reset allof the settings that the user had in Outlook? Rules, views, etc.?

I have had the exact same problem with outlook on 3 machines. As CurlerGirl states, deleting the Outlook profile solves the issue.
