dvd rom

By sterlingellis ·
My dvd rom works after I start my system. If I remove a disc, and insert it again, my drive is not accessible. I restart, and as long as my disc is in the drive I can use it. If not, I get drive not accessible when I put a disc in the drive. I checkthe sysedit and there is no information in the autoexec.bat. There is no text at all. What is the cause of this?

Things I would check:
Is the jumper configured correctly, that is, is it a slave if it is supposed to be and a master if it is supposed to be, assuming IDE. If SCSI, is the cable set up properly in the correct connection order. Is it the right kindof cable?

Boot up into DOS / BIOS program (you didn't mention your OS) / startup settings. Does BIOS detect drive before Windows/OS sees it?

Are you SURE you have the right drivers? Are they updated?

That's all I can think of without knowing specifics of hardware config/OS/etc...

I have windows xp professional. I can see the drive when the system boots. I can play an audio cd, a dvd, or read a data cd when my device has the cd in it at the start. After I use the cd and replace it, i get no disc in drive.

I'll answer your last question first.

The old files that you view with sysedit, (autoexec, config, sys, win) are now only used for DOS mode and other "legacy" applications.

For Windows 98 and later, there is no need for any information in these files.

All device setup information is stored in the registry, and .ini and .inf files in the windows folders.

I suspect that the problem with your DVD drive is an IDE bus master driver problem.

I would download and install the latest IDE driver for your chipset / motherboard.

Saw this with Win ME system, seems it was locking the contents of the CD into memory and would not refresh (You did not mention OS), this did occur only after many reboots with the same CD in the drive. Interestingly enough after rebooting with no disk in the drive it began operating normally again.

So my answer would be Windows bug.
