E Commerce - How far should I go

The Company I work for allready has a web site and clients can allready place orders via E Mail, but I am concerned about unleashing our customers on our intranet for ordering, configuring and validating their purchases as well as paying for them securely.
Any advise ?

With a little planning you should be able to setup a Corporate Extranet, where by you could create customers profiles to track each order and it's status. This would not have to impact your productions applications. since the data would be aged in aperfect world you could use virtual copies of applications to place in the in between zone ( extranet) that could be refreshed as time manpower and CPU/storage would permit.Thus providing a updated version of the order /orders placed
