E-machine cd-rom issue

By ciberdann ·
A customer brought in an E-tower 266
It would not play music cd's.
I changed the fm cord and the cd-rom.
I also checked the drivers and the volume control.
It would play wav's ok.
I am thinking that I may need to replace the motherboard

Does cdplayer start? Does it advance in time? Is the CDROM accessed during this? CDROM audio cable compatible with the pinout of the soundblaster? Do you hear music by putting headphones on the CDROM headphone exit? Some wieird multimedia apps there?
ALSO VOLUME control of some sound cards have a MUTE checkbox instead of ENABLE for the mixer!!! be aware that the CD may be checked in mixer but thay may mean mute!!!! ess1868 drivers have that sh.t.

be sure to check the mainboard layout. The eMachines have 2-3 seperate places to plug in sound cable in. I have ran into the user plugging the cable into the wrong one.

On some of the e-machines I have purchased, the cable connecting the CD-ROM to on-board sound chip was either not there, connected backwards or in the bios set-up, "on board sound chip" was disabled.
