E-mail/Internet Tracking in Netware 5.1?

By mjwilly ·
Our organization is considering tracking Internet usage and e-mails that are sent/received through LAN. We are utilizing a DSL line and a router connnected to our Novel 5.1 LAN.

Does Novel Netware 5.1 offer a tracking monitor as part of its typical install? If so, what file holds this information and what do I need to view the data?

Thank you for your help.

E-mail/Internet Tracking in Netware 5.1?

Unfortunately, no. The only solution novell offers in these areas are Bordermanager and Groupwise, but they cost $$$$.

Computer Associates ( www.cai.com ) and
other 3rd party vendors have a wide range of applications for monitoring, but the wide range of products is matched by a wide range of features ( or lack thereof ).

Perhaps a more economical approach would be to sign up for a period with an Internet filtering company like dotsafe and use their management reports. If you find theresults you want, you can drop the service, and not be stuck with an expensive server app gathering dust on the shelf.

In agreement with answer 1 but would add:

Because the Internet (IP) traffic typically flows directly from the PC to the router, NW 5.1 will never see the packets.

To run an in-house solution for tracking usage, you would need to put a PC or arouter in the middle of the traffic flow to allow the device to scan the content. There is no way to do that on the cheap.

Most firms these days seem content to set policies that make improper use punishable, and then only actively enforce the policies when breaches in policy are found.

When problems occur, there is usually plenty of evidence in cache and e-mail accounts of the individual in question to make a clear call as to the misuse of the system.

You may want to use Novell's ManageWise, which does provide LANalyzer, a monitoring tool for LAN traffic, not only from-to NetWare servers but between everything it finds on the wire. It doesn't require a separate PC, it runs as a set of NLMs on the server, and has a client part on a PC. But that shows only packages, sizes, amounts etc, and possible errors, and I presume you want to know who surfs where and so.
Maybe your router can provide that information (doubt it), or otherwise you need a proxy between your LAN and the DSL, that can cache (and speed up) the connection, and keep logs of who does what when.
