For a small company, around 100 employees, what would the recommended size limit for email attachments be?

I work for a company of that size, the limit here is 7MB, we use VPOP3 to retrieve e-mail.
If any of our customers need to send a file greater than that, we ask they to send via FTP.
Hope this will help you.

There is really no cut and dry answer for that question. What you need to look at before you set limits is:
1) How do your users get their email (Dial-up or connected to the lan)
2) What is the storage space availabilty on the server?
We are a company of over 2000 Exchagne users on a single server and our limits are 10 Mb in or out. Our only problem is with the laptop users that dial-in to get their mail a 10Mb download takes some time.

Suggest you conduct a survey. Ask you users what is the average size attachment they receive, send out, what type, and how often(daily/weekly/monthly).

Then determine if you have the resources you have available to store them or force a download to there desktop.

Having it too small can generate excessive traffic sending undeliverable replys.

If most of the attachments are document 4mb is enough, If they are powerpoint slides you may need more.

All good answers above - but they all missed something too - bandwidth! If you're running 100Mbit, then you can handle larger sizes, but 10Mbit will slow down considerably with larger attachments.

You also want to look at your reasons for limiting the size. If you're trying to eliminate paople sending program files, then the problem won't be solved by limiting size - it's a training and security issue. I like the survey suggestion (above) - find out what your needs are, then implement restrictions only as much as needed.
