Email Server on Windows 98?

By wbb ·
When setting up a peer-to-peer network using Windows 98, is there an easy way (or any way) to setup an email server so the clients can send messages back and forth? Is a server even required to do this?

If I'm not mistaken, you can use any of the workstations as E-Mail server (having installed the needed software), but of course you will have the side effects - low resourses left for workstation use and being unable to restart it.

No server is required. To setup network email you need to add the service microsoft mail. Once added go to control panel and chick on microsoft postoffice and administrator an existing postoffice.

On your Windows 98 Cd there is a directory called OLDWIN95/MESSAGE. This contains the Microsoft messaging used under Windows 95. Microsoft exchange, once installed, adds an icon to your control panel which allows you to create a post office, specifydirectory, etc. We are using this method at work for 50-60 Win 9x machines. The beauty of this method is that it is possible to set it up for primarily internal mail, but still allow Internet email, as well, on a user to user basis as needed.

All you have to do is add the microsoft mail service. You can do this in control panel. If you would like to do this and have a program check you external email, then goto Tucows and download a program call Allmail. It works really well, and it'sonly 50 bucks
