That's called a virus.

by Oz_Media In reply to emails from netadmin@tech ...

Well two things tell me that email is garbage.

.scr attachment and Letter.zip, I would say infected with 'mydoom' or 'Sircam'

I don't think this is from TR at al unless they have been nailed and have an open relay system, which I would doubt. It is more likely someone is spoofing them.

Yes, as a matter of fact.

by DC_GUY In reply to emails from netadmin@tech ...

I just got one fifteen minutes ago. It wasn't identical, but the sender was an @techrepublic address, it had an emoticon in the subject line, it had a pirate word like "aarggh" in the text as well as something that was called a password, and it had a .zip attachment. Our network administrators recently warned us to NEVER open a .zip attachment; it's the latest fad in wormhole technology. Just delete it. ... Has anybody else been getting e-mails with a subject line of ????????, written in various foreign languages, including ones that don't use the Roman alphabet?

Netsky worm

My guess is it's the Netsky worm.

Don't open the attachment.

safe side...

by shawn In reply to Netsky worm

I knew this was something worm or virus related and probably did not originate with Tech Republic(knowingly), I just wanted them to be aware of it, just in case they weren't because I've gotten a couple of these.

Just to be safe,
Shawn

Could be Beagle-A Worm

by maxwell edison In reply to emails from netadmin@tech ...

.
Whether it's the new Beagle-A or Netsky, it's still a slimy old worm. Don't take the bait, though. You don't need to tackle it, even though the attachment name might lure you into wanting to nibble. The reel moral of this story is to avoid the hook tactics of their fishing expeditions. You certainly have bigger fish to fry than this. Okay, I'll stop now.
