Error 0087: The Parameter is Incorrect

By bronnie ·
Hello,

I'm getting this message when I try to start a couple different services under NT 4.0 SP5. This sounds like some kind of generic message. What steps
should I take to find out what the underlying problem is.

Thanks.

Ronnie

Try going into event viewer under admin tools. There should be an entry in there for each service giving a warning or error. Double click on each entry and you'll get the error number interpreted. Did this work under a previous Service Pack or is this a new server? Have you installed software after the service pack was installed? Sometimes you will need to reinstall the service pack after software installation - Internet Explorer is a prime example. Without knowing what service(s) you're tryingto start it's difficult to take this any further.

Very difficult without event ID's. This error is most commonly found related to sound cards, modems, or nic's. But has also been seen related to synching errors, wins errors, and permissions on the system32 dir.
There are a few things you can do: create a no network hardware profile; disable all non-essential services from startup and then start them one by one until you find the offender. You can also uninstall SP5 (you did save your old installation ?:-). Post more info
