Error adding domain user to local group

By emorse ·
I am trying to add a domain user to my local Windows 2000 workstation and receive the error Processing of Object "username" failed with the following error: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted".
NOTES: the workstation has a valid domain account, I am logged into the network as a domain admin account that has full rights to this machine. I receive a similar error when trying to promote a server to a domain controller.

Your Active Directory was not configured correctly. Try run DCPromo again.

If I run this I will have to remove Active Directory from that domain controller which will remove all domain objects/accounts. This is my only domain controller in the domain. Is there another way around this ?

Workstation domain accounts are transient in nature. Try dropping the PC off the domain (by joining a workgroup), deleting the workstation account manually from Active Directory, re-adding the account (if it is not in a default location), then rejoining the workstation to the domain. Of course, make sure you have proper permissions to add a workstation to the domain. (I know: duh, but, I've been there - "you did what?").

Thanks for the attempt. Unfortunately I've tried this and had no success.

This is a problem with DNS. Check to make sure that the proper DNS entry has been entered on the client PC, then try to add the user. Next step would be to run ipconfig/flushdns and then ipconfig/registerdns from the command prompt of the local machine. Reboot the machine (not necessary but I always do it) and that should take care of it. As a last resort, I would enter a static entry in the DNS file for the machine itself. Good luck.

If you install netbeui on your server and the client machine you can add domain users to the local users account.
Good luck!
