error message upon boot

By fathom ·
I just built a computer and installed Windows 98 on it. The installation process went fine. When the computer restarted itself, I got this error message:

While initializing device NDIS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

No matter how many times I restart my computer I get this message. Although, it will let me into safe mode. Plealse help. Thanks in advance.

Is the CPU running at or faster than 2.2GHZ?
If it is you need to download a fix from microsoft. Check out KB article 312108 on the microsoft support site.

If not try removing all you NIC stuff, protocols. Reboot the system and let it find your NIC, then reinstall drivers, set protocols, etc.

Good luck!!

I couldn't find a fix to download from Microsoft. The NIC is integrated in the motherboard.

"To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix."

Delete the NIC from Device Manager and let Windows reload the driver

If you have not received the patch from MS, I can e-mail you a copy of it...Have faced the problem a few times w/ older machines, the patch fixes it right up after installation and a reboot.

Since I have received about 50 e-mails so far requesting the patch and this thread is still active and not yet rated and closed, I am posting the link for the NDIS patch.

Here's the link where the patch is posted on the net and I use it on all my dual boot XP-98SE systems that I build and it works.

Do download and read the "Read Me" file there too and archive another copy of the patch and save it elsewhere too, as if you change the major Windows Networking settings (like un-installing/re-installing Windows Networking for example)later, you may need to re-install the patch again.

No worries though, as you know if you need to re-install the patch, Windows will tell you because it won't boot properly and you will get the NDIS windows protection error.

Good Luck!

That page is not mine, just where I found the patch when I needed it.
