Excel 97 not saving changes

By pjselinski ·
Once a year we work with large excel spreadsheets containing close to 10000 entries some will have multiple books. Periodically after making numerous changes and saving them to the network the changes do not stick. Office 97 with sp2a and Windows 98. The files are all located on a Novell 4.11 sp6 network. This problem only occurs in excel with one person who is working on large spreadsheets and she is saving the changes.

could you try and save the spreadsheet locally to the pc?? if it does save the changes locally, then you know there is a issue with the network... also are you enable/ (do you have the rights) to save changes??

If you do not have any problems saving to the c: drive, try this.

1. Map a drive letter to the folder on the network. Then try saving your file.
2. If you have tried doing the #1, save it going without a mapped drive.
3. Make sure the userhas the appropriate rights.
4. Create a shortcut to the folder on the desktop and and try opening and saving it that way.

This is probably too obvious, but have you checked to make sure that the calculation is set to automatic under tools, options. This can certainly give the effect of changes not being saved, by not updating calculations until f9 is pressed.

You meantioned 'We' which leads to a problem where the file may be opened by several users simultaneously. If person A makes 10 changes and then saves the file, and person B makes 2 changes later on and then saves, only the last 2 changes are stored.

I suggest importing the data to MS Access or whatever database application you use. You should avoid using excel if this is really a database - try adding more memory if you cannot move the data to a dbms.
