Excel 97 odd behaviour running on XP.

By devisonr ·
Excel opens but not the spreedsheet. Unable to cut & paste from Excel to Word. Theu're able to create new spreadsheets from the "File menu"

There is only one machine running Excel 97 on XP, the rest are running on WIN98. The WIN98 boxes don't have a problem. They have other machines running Office XP on XP pro.

I have asked the customer to install the SR-1 & SR-2 office patches which he had not done. Has anyone experienced of know of this happening anywhere?

Software Compatibilty Mode

The cusomter installed both SR-1 and SR-2 patches. Problem still exists.

I have know asked him to Software Compatibilty Mode utility in the Accessories menu. The easier way is to just manually search for the old application in this case Excel. Then right click, select properties, then the compatibility tab. Finally enable comaptibility mode by ticking the box and using the drop down menu select an older opperating system i.e. WIN98/ME.

The customer looked at the compatibility tab and it was already set to be compatible with Win 98. So he unchecked the compatibility mode check box. Now if he start Excel & opens a worksheet, he can cut and paste to word.

In addition if excel is already open, and he double click a sheet in explorer, it opens fine. If, however, excel is not open and I double click a sheet in explorer, excel opens, then generates a series of error messages and finally opens the worksheet.

In the error messages, there are references to documents.xls and my.xls, these are not files i can find on any of the workstations. Does excel reference a default template, the way that word uses normal.dot? If so could this be the problem?

XP and Excel 97

by bunkee In reply to Slowly moving forward, St ...

I had a similiar problem. When an Excel workbook was opened through association, it would give series of errors and then open about 15 different files, e.g., Acrobat files, etc. If it ran into a file it could not open, it would give you an error. After clicking <OK> to the error, it would continue opening other files until it got to the actual file I wanted to work with!

I ended up reinstalling Office 97 and loaded SR1, SR2, SR2a, and SR2b in that order. It cleared up all my problems. Excel is fat and happy on my Win XP Pro PC. Let me know if it works for you.
