Excel file corruption on Netware server

By pteipe ·
Over the last 3 weeks, I have had some weird problems with Excel files on my netware 4.10 server. We are a mixed shop with NT and Netware. NT doing mostly IP based routing and Internet functions, and Netware handling File & Print. Most of the endusers run either windows 95 or 98, Netware client 32, Client for Microsoft Networks. I have seen a pattern of Excel files that have been left open according to the file server, yet the users close their files before logging off and going home. When a user tries to open one of these, they get a message "the file has already been opened in Read/write. click ok to open in read only mode". You click ok,
and it is unable to open a simple read only copy of the file. Seems like a file locking problem - possibly something to do with Client32?

Look at http://support.novell.com. There are a number of articles related to this problem.
Two of them are 10018376 and 10020920. Just enter "Excel" in search box.
I've also had this problem with Word documents.

I have had this problem with both Novell 4.2 server and Win NT 4.0 Servers. The problem was a virus. Use Norton Antivirus or what you like, get the latest definition file and virus check all your files. Leave autoprotect on for while, even if it slows your computer a bit. After I cleaned out the viruses, the problem went away. Hope this helps.
