Excel file does not open Clicking in Explorer

By mippps ·
Windows XP-Pro on 2 year old Dell PC.

Using Exployer and double clicking on (.xls) will not open the excel file up properly. The Excel
program opens the Excel menus and structure of the excel screen shows but it is gray. No grid is displayed and clicking on Tools Menu most of the drop down menu is grayed out. Tools | Options is also grayed out.
-----
Message: ?c:\Documents.xls? could not be found. Check spelling of the name and disk location for being correct.
My Note: the file name was different than Documents.xls?..
----
Any suggestions will help. A user is in pain and I can not solve the problem. No software has recently been install. The power supply failed and has been replaced. It Explorer clicking on Excel files worked ok before power supply failed. Excel File came up properly with data in grids.

Any help is appreciated.

or try office/excel repair. you don't mention version of excel so can't be specific. in general:
Start/Control Panel/Add Remove/Microsoft Office <click> change/repair. you almost for sure must have office/excel installation cd available for repair. otherwise, reinstall? does it do this in safe mode? what about trying a previous system restore point? (explore possibilities with Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore

The office/excel repair had been tried along with System Restore before the question was placed. I had also reinstalled MS-office to no avail. I suffered a Power Supply failure and after it was replaced this problem appeared. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. The PC is a client on Win2k and if signed on with administrator the problem goes away. The suggestions did not help. Thanks for the info.
