Exch 5.5 refusing mail for past employee

By InfosecMN ·
Is there an easy way to refuse mail in Exchange 5.5 for previous employees? I would like a message to be sent to the sender to inform them that they are sending to an invalid address.

TIA

You could disable their NT account, if you have the method of creating NT users, then proceeding to create their Exchange Mailbox. Disable their NT account, then HIDE the user within Exchange 5.5 in the Recepient list. Anyone sending to that user within the company or outside of it, should get their message back, with User does not exist message. Good Luck!

I did post a comment to your answer before but obviously it did not take.

This past employee's NT and email accounts have been removed. The mail goes into an undeliverable bin which I have to go through because sometimes company mail is sentto an incorrect address accidently and I can usually forward it to the right person. However all the junk mail being sent to the past employee makes this task difficult. TIA

This employee's NT login and email account has been removed. The email goes into the undeliverable bin. This particular employee must have been on many junk mail lists. I have to go through the bin for valid company mail that might have been sentto the wrong address accidently and all that junk mail makes it difficult.

The best thing to do is to bounce it back to the sender. If you keep just deleting this e-mail, they will just keep coming.

If it any kind of list server mailings, you should be able to unsubscribe this ex-employee also.

By bounce back do you mean reply to sender? Because it gets sent to the administrator mailbox, if I replied it would get sent back to me. The original email is an attachment that doesn't allow reply.

Create a mailbox with the same e-mail address, then set the NT user to be your account and logon to the mailbox to unsubscribe if need be ( setup a different profile), But you can setup an 'out of office' reply to 'bounce' the e-mails back to the sender, or you could set the size limits for incoming mail to 0 this will bounce everything back. You could also set expiry limits on this one mailbox so that items will be deleted automatically.
Once you have control over the incoming mail you can ndeal with it how you want
