Exchange 2007 VMWare lab on a laptop!

By TekyWanabe ·
Hi All,

This is probably a question that's been asked in the past but I'd to give up on page 10 after trawling past Q&As.

Up till this point, I've only worked with Exchange at a 'basic' level...move/delete/create user mailboxes, etc. Having now embarked on a journey to really get under the hood of Exchange and get my hands dirty, I've bought a couple of books and am looking to set up a virtual lab at home.

Unfortunately, I've only got limited hardware for now...
- Compaq Presario CQ50-215NR laptop
- with .90 GHz AMD Athlon X2 QL-60 Dual-Core Processor
- 2GB RAM which I'll be upgrading to 4GB this weekend
- 160 GB HDD

I have VMWare Server installed.

1. What is the "minimum" number of virtual machines I will need to install for an Exchange 2007 lab?

2. Any suggestion for the configuration of these machines

3. What's the maximum number of Virtual machines I'll need to run concurrently at any one time when simulating Send / Rreceive email ?

,Many thanks for your answers and suggestions.

Best regards,

TekWanabe

Not sure as to what to say here

But you'll need a Computer capable of supporting a 64 Bit OS.

If you plan on running this a Virtual system you'll need a 64 Bit OS to launch from. That's the absolute Minium you'll need.

Hi OH, I'd read somewhere that there's a 32-bit Evaluation copy...perhaps this is no longer the case given the fact that MS has moved on to Ex2010?

As far as I'm aware the 32 Bit Evaluation Version

Is long gone and no longer available. The current versions are all 64 Bit.

I've run a succesfull lab with with a minimum of 2 machines (PCs)

2 Dell Optiplex 740
Athlon X2 2 GHz
4 GB RAM

I set one up as a DC and Exchange back/front-end the other for the client
