Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Migration

By Willo0710 ·
presently have a windows nt and win2k domain. To
migrate from win nt to win2k I used the AD Migration tool.
To use this tool it I had to make my win2k domain a native
mode domain. I have my ex5.5 server in the nt domain and
want to use the ADC to connect to the new win2k domain so
I can install a new ex2k server in the win2k domain and
migrate them to the new ex2k server. The nt and win2k
domains are on different subnet and I was made to
understand that to use the ADC both the ex5.5 server the
the ex2k server must be on the same subnet and also the
win2k domain must be in mix mode. now my win2k domain
could not be in mix mode when I am using the AD Migration
tool. How can I set this up so that my ex5.5 server can
communicate with AD and my new ex2k server, that are on
different subnet, and yes I know I must install ADC on the
win2k subnet. Is this possible for me to work with ADC
across subnets.

Help need badly for this issue.

Thanks to you all.

Willo

the ADC should be installed on a Windows 2000 Server...
Your Ex5.5 is on NT4.0 server and Exchange 2k is on new server running Win2k Server and you're already running AD network, but have not run the ADC?

If the move to E2K cannot be done at once, then setting up ADC and plan for coexistance is needed. If all users can be brought over at once, then E2K can be setup in a new Org and the Migration Wizard can be used. But without coexistance, you will need to touch the client to redirect to the new Org and will lose OST, rules, etc. There is no way to avoid touching the clients. You can avoid physically touching the clients by generating a new profile for them in a login script by using a profile generation tool. The advantage of coexistance is that those settings are preserved and you will not need to tough the clients after a Move Mailbox.

For migrating from Exchange 5.5 / NT 4.0 domain to Active Directory/Exchange 2k and creating a new AD domain, the simplest way is to complete your migration, setup the ADC Connection Agreements appropriately, (re-permission Exchange mailboxes if you didn't carry SID History) and install Exchange 2000 Server into the site...

If you are joining a E2k server to an existing site all you need is the ADC (Active Directory Connector)NO other connector for messaging is needed.

a lil learnin on Subnets:
