Exchange Mailboxes

By Diesel ·
We have a single exchange server at our site. We are doing an entire network rebuild, and want to use new hardware for everything. Our existing exchange server is in deperate need of attrention, and we do not want to restore the entire server from backup. We would prefer to back the individual mailboxes up, and restore them on a new server, as our entire information store seems to be corrupt. How would we go about foing this ? ( we have Backup Exec v7 ) This is an urgent matter, and any help would be most appreciated !! Many Thanks.

If I remember correctly, Ver 7.0 does not have Exchange extensions. It may be easier(depending on size of company) to create a .PST folder on each individual client.

You should be able to backup your exchange server by mailbox as well as by entire information store. Backup exec also allows you to restore these to any server not just back to the original location like arcserve used to do at least. If you go in tothe job definition tab and either check your current backup settings or create a new one for this project you can go to the exchange server and drill down to the mailbox layer (I think you have to have the agent for this which I assume you have). You can pick which mailboxes to backup or just click the top folder and backup all of them. You can then test this by setting up either your new server or a test exchange server and restore either all mailboxes or a couple for test purposes and then verify the stats between the two servers as to size and number of messages. I have had to do it so I know it works.

I would try to fix the IS problems first.
In your scenario you could use Move Server Wizard (SP3), or use Exmerge.EXE from BORK (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q174/1/97.ASP)

However I believe the following could be a "smoother" way: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq_appxa.htm
