Exchange Server and Linux Mail Server.

By mzrahman ·
I have a Red Hat Linux Mail Server connected to the Internet with VSAT. It's IP address is suppose 202.4.96.2. It's domain is dhakacom.com! I have suppose 1000 dial-up users and 20 LAN users (office).

Now, I want to have an Exchange Server which will only download the internal LAN user mails and keep them in their corresponding mailboxes in the NT server. I want to use MS Mail service for downloading LAN users mails, so that I stiil have the internal Task assignment service.

For example, zia@dhakacom.com is a mail user in the Linux mail server. zia@dhakacom.com is a dial-up user and also a LAN user. When he comes to the office he uses outlook's ms-mail service to download his mails from the Exchange server and when at home he downloads his mails from the linux server.

Is it possible to setup an Exchange server like this? Please give details.

Why don't you use the outlook web access for the 20 users on your LAN? This would also allow them to see there calendar as well as email. If this is not an option then you should be able to setup your Linux mail server to forward and keep a copy of the email to your exchange server users (i.e. zia@dhakacom.com forwards to zia@exchangeservername.dhakacom.com). Add an internet email address in Exchange for that user to accept zia@exchangeservername.dhakacom.com.

couple of assumptions..

Outlook 2000 or 98,97 is the internal client.

POP3 is the mail protocol on linux Server.

Linux server can be accessed from inside network.

you will have to touch every workstation but it is the easiest:
leave the POP3 Linux server alone. use the exchange server only for the tasking.

Setup outlook for Corporate environment.
Setup a POP3 mail in outlook to the linux Server and make sure the mail is left on the linux Server.set the check for mail time toa reasonable limit ( 5-15 Min).
setup Microsoft exchange Server connection in OUTLOOK and use the tasks and calendaring of Exchange Server.
Raise the POP3 Transport as the top transport for mail in the mail and news profile settings in Control Panel.

Hope it helps!
Peter.

If you are still tackling this problem, perhaps you should consider calling your local super-hero.
