Explorer Drag and Drop

By Thumper1 ·
I hope this isn't too stupid a question, but is there any way to disable the "Drag and Drop feature in Windows 2000 Explorer? I have a number of users who are constantly draging their client directories "somewhere else" and going into a panic when they can't find them.
Thanks
Bill

I don't think you can disable drag and drop, Bill. You could try teaching your clients how to search for the client directories if they have a unique name?

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately there is no way to disable this feature. However, end-user education in these cases is the key. Educating the user to only use a specific directory or not moving the directory anywhere.

This issue is not so uncommon as many may think. I have in the past suggested creating a special sub-directory off their My Documents folder and only using that area.. keeping anything they choose to save in some sub-directory under My Documents. This not only helps them to remember where it was placed but also aids in keeping their drive a little more organized so file searches are simpler.

Another option to find their missing directory is if they can remember the name of the file in question, performing a file search of the drive for that data.

This has proven pretty successful in my experience since this feature is not a user configurable option.

Good luck and hope this helps!! :)

Regards,
Jesse

Found an article that may actually be of interest to you in Microsoft's Knowledge Base. http://search.microsoft.com/default.asp?boolean=ALL&nq=NEW&so=RECCNT&ig=01&ig=02&ig=03&ig=04&ig=05&ig=06&ig=07&ig=08&ig=09&ig=10&i=00&i=01&i=02&i=03&i=04&i=05&i=06&i=07&i=08&i=09&qu=Disable%20Drag%20&%20Drop&siteid=us

Eliminate any spaces and it should take you to the results page.

Evidently there is a user policy that may resolve your issue, although I don't think it will completely do what you want.. it appears to disable cut, copy, paste, etc in the context menu. Perhaps exploring these FAQ's a little deeper may produce the desired results. But it's as close as I can find. :) Hope it helps.

If you are using Windows 2000/XP, try setting permissions to disallow users to move the specific client directories. Hopefully that may solve our problem.

I really appreciate the help with this problem. Training the users is really the only solution. I had to walk through a diplomatic mine field in showing them that they did, in fact move the folders in question without making them feel stupid. (Thankfully, the Novell Salvage screen was very convincing.)
