    Explorer.exe error & close, IE6 Error

    Locked

    by ed2967 ·

I have a Win 2K Pro PC that gives an error every time the user tries to open My Computer, Network Places, Recycle Bin, or any folder. (Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. An error log is being created.)

Additionally, Internet Explorer 6 also has an opening error.

This started after installing Symantec Norton Anti Virus. I have since removed NAV.

I have ran Stinger(latest), Ad-Aware, and Spybot (adaware & spybot
definitions >1 month old) as suggested in other postings with no improvement. I must keep & use an old App on this PC for at least 3 more months.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

Using SP4. Was not an upgrade. Does not have Norton CleanSweep.
Explorer.exe is running in task manager as used by desktop.
Elplorer.exe works great in safe Mode.

The problem sounds like NAV was corrupted on install. This is usually, but not always, caused by an active virus at the time of the installation of NAV.

This can also be caused by another anti virus program being installed on the computer. Any other anti virus program, including earlier versions of NAV, should be unistalled before installing NAV. Should there be no other anti virus program installed, I would pull the hard drive and slave it on another system that is known to be virus free and has a current anti virus program with the latest updates. I would then run a virus scan on the affected drive and remove any viruses found.

Should the hard drive be virus free, I would run diagnostics to insure that a hardware issue did not cause the corrupt load of NAV.

Should everything else check out fine you will probably need to edit the registry to remove NAV, guessing that you installed NAV 2K4, for NAV 2K4 does not have a removal tool and using the removal tool for 2K3 and previous version will only cause further corruption. Be certain to backup the registry before making any changes.

      I hope this helps you.

I ended up booting directly from the Win2K CD(as the typical CD startup wouldn’t allow a repair to newer SP)and reapring the Win2K installation — Didn’t help. Then the NIC had quit, uninstalled the NIC & re-installed it — Explorer & IE 6 then both worked perfect. Amazing…
