extended memory problems

my computers is having memory problems so i went to an ms dos prompt and type mem and notice that the extended memory is been all use or most of it left with only 1624k.
i restart the computer without opening any program and i got them same extended memory free
i have a total of 64 ram

please help

If you do a "mem /c /p" command, what's the "largest executable program size" value? To be most efficient, it should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 602K, which is accomplished by adding lines to your config.sys file, i.e. -
device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
You can add Files and Buffers statements too, but be aware that the higher those values, the more pgysical memory will be used.

Guidos answer is correct , but I would try it without the "noems" also to see what best suits your setup as you are using limited Ram. No need to assign any points to me, give them to Guido as it was his answer that was correct, hope it works out for you.
