External DVD CD Rom XP Problem

By AtlBo ·
I bought an HP external USB DVD CDROM for my Dell Optima 260 with XP. It worked fine until tonight. A few hours ago I went to back up a file, and the device was missing. I tried unplugging the device from the computer, but I always get the message "USB Device not Recognized" in my system tray. I also tried shutting down the computer and doing a restart. According to device manager, the drivers for the drive are not installed. The message there reads "No drivers are installed for this device." I have no driver disk, but I think the driver is onboard the DVD CD ROM unit, something a tech told me he thought was true of this unit (HP dvd840y). I had never heard of that before, but it worked without a driver installation until tonight, so I don't know. Are there any tricks I can do to get the DVD CD ROM up and going again?

Another Machine

If you can try and test the device in another machine. Hopefully this fault hasnt happened because the device is actually broken.

Just editing my post to say you may not have the drivers for it there either so http://h200003.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=de&prodNameId=3184620&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=1101877&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228 and download them :)

just try to restore the system into the back date and then try to plug in this device and let us know what is the status as of now...
and if doesn't work then this might be the problem with O.S. but before clarifying this check this device to other pc.. if it is working fine on other PC that means the Problem is with the O.S.

Power cycle the drive!

by greg In reply to External DVD CD Rom XP Pr ...

Though I see that AtlBo@... fixed his own problem, I'll add my confirmation. - Power cycling the drive has worked for me too -. Two different PCs. This is an issue that surely would have been fixed in a firmware revision but HP don't list one for the DVD840y, do they? I tried the 68JH F/W for the 840i internal drive, as suggested somewhere on the web, but it was a no-go due to model difference. Maybe one of the other F/Ws? They are all labeled 68JH, though.
