External Hard Drive not detected by Windows Explorer but seen in Device Mgr

By kdabalena ·
Hello Everyone,

I have an MSI external hard drive that I can't be seen in Windows Explorer, but can be seen in Device Manager. I was previously able to scan the disk with my Virus Scanner, but unfortunately when I was about to access the HD itself, Windows Explorer crashed. I tried going back to Computer > Hard Disk Drives, it can't be seen anymore. Though it can still be seen in device manager and I can still safely remove the unit. What can I do to restore it without reformatting? What software can I use?

Thanks in advance!

Also, to add on this. I tried connecting the HD to another laptop, but the same thing happens. Something must have gotten corrupted when Explorer first crashed. Any ideas?

Try a linux live cd to see if it will read the disk.

if not try Partition table recovery software
(http://www.ptdd.com/) see if that will read it
if not try spinrite (www.grc.com)

let me know of that helps

Yes, this is the same external drive. EASEUS cant proceed and the drive is seen as unallocated.
Im not sure of the reaid or spanned question as it was not with me prior to the windows explorer crash. but i was able to detect and see it before.

i see, Because if it was part of a RAid drive set or a spanned disk , you may not be able to read it without have the full set of drices that it was part of.

NETWORK DRIVES NOT ONLINE CAN CAUSE THIS PROBLEM

If you use the Computer Management Otion from the Control Panel and select Disk Management you can assign a drive letter to the external disk drive which will be used every time it gets connected.
