extra com port

windows 95 has installed a extra com port5 i can not remove this port every time i reboot pc new hard ware is found installs this port this port has just started to show up in device manager after i installed a new isa card with a com port on board i have removed this card from pc but the port keeps reinstalling

Hi it could be that one of the normal Com ports or the modem has been reasigned to Com5 therefore when deleting Com 5 it just puts it back. Try to delete the others in turn until you find the one that does not come back after reboot.

If comm port 5 was the port assigned to the extra card, what you have is part of the driver still there. Some drivers create a virtual comm port for the hardware to use.

Start in add/remove programs, and see if the comm port driver is listed there. If so, remove it.

Another place to look is in the system files.

Run sysedit and look through the files for lines related to an extra comm port, or the card that you had.

Rem out the lines, and re-boot.
If the system boots fine, and theextra comm port is now missing, you have found the cause of the problem.

You should be able to delete the lines, and the related software files.

As always, back up files before editing so you can recover easily.

A really cool way to get rid of it is to go into the Device Manager and in the IO Ports folder, choose the port5 and Disable the box. This will put a red X on that port and Windows won't see it.
