    FAULTY USB KEYBOARD

    Locked

    by jrgeek ·

    DURING PS SURFING MY USERS KEYBOARD WOULD INPUT STRANGE CHARACTERS. Restarted pc (Win XP Pro) but could not type characters into the Username & Password fields to logon. Hence the following behaviors; 1)can ctr+alt+delete once for the logon window 2)tried different usb ports, 3)the usb mouse and other usb devices work 4)backspace button inserts little square boxes from right to left 5)can only use tab while in the bios 6) no other keys work except those mentioned above 7)unable to logon to any of the F12 start menu options like last good config etc. 8)its on a domain 9) cain’t login locally either 10)no arrows 11) numlock is fine
    So what is up with this. Haven’t tried wireless usb yet. I have a suspicion that this could be infected with malware or virus.

          The Key is to find out the Name of the Virus. Once you have that you can use Google to find the Removal Tools. From another PC download and install these two programs and copy the the installed folders to a USB Stick.

          Download Spybot – Search & Destroy 1.5.2 and install it. Update it. http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

          Download Sophos and the latest IDE Files. Install it and extract the IDE files to the C:\SAV32CLI folder.
          http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/13251.html

          Copy and paste the below two lines into Notepad and save the file to the USB Stick as sophos.bat, it will scan and remove.

          ===============================

          CD SAV32CLI

          SAV32CLI -REMOVE -P=C:\REMOVLOG.TXT

          ===============================

          The Windows Vista Recovery CD is a smaller Download than a lot of other Tools and can be used to Boot to a Command Prompt where you can connect to a USB Device to run Antivirus software.

          It does’nt matter if the Default Operating System is XP based it can still be used on XP PRO or XP Home.

          Creating a Windows Vista Recovery CD

          http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=622

          Download from here: and Burn it to CD using Nero or similar.

          http://coblitz.codeen.org/neosmart.net/downloads/guides/Vista_Repair/Vista_Recovery_Disc_x86.iso

          Boot from the CD and on the first screen click Next, click Repair your computer, click Next and select Command Prompt.

          Type in cd E: and press Enter or the corresponding Drive Letter of the USB Device. eg: c: is normally where the Operating System is installed. Unless you have your Drive Partitioned the next Drive Letter D: would be allocated to your Cd/DVD Drive. If E: does’nt work try F:

          When you have changed directory type in F8continuously as the PC starts up.

          You can now select Safe Mode GUI and and turn off System Restore then run Spybot from the USB Stick. Take a note of what it finds.

          Just to be on the safe side when you finish do an online scan with Bitdefender.

          http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

          Remember to turn on System Restore when you have finished cleaning.

          alternative and that is to Flash your BIOS with the latest Update. You would have to go to the Manufacturer of your PC’s site to download it and install it following the instructions.

          using a usb MS wireless/keyboard mouse fixed the problem. Didn’t see any asterisks in Dev Mgr pointing to usb controllers. Will continue to do further research to determine what caused the problem. I’ll post my findings for the benefit of us all. Certainly appreciate everyones help on this matter. By the way the other keyboard I used for testing was also a Dell. Perhaps the problem lies there. Thanks again

      Can you use the keyboard to enter your BIOS? Does the keyboard work there?

      Can you boot to a CD? Does the Keyboard work there?

      Can you boot to safe mode command prompt?

      In reply to FAULTY USB KEYBOARD

      intersting that the two that you have so far used could possibly be faulty. I suppose the only way to find out for sure is to try them in another PC. The other thing to check is in the BIOS to make sure that anything to do with USB is enabled.
