File and Printer Sharing from Client 98

By keithw ·
NT 4.0 Server with WIN 98 Clients...The 98 Client wants to share it's local printer to others on the network, it is setup for file and print sharing and is logged into the server, click on sharing tab in file or printer properties, tag as shared, click ADD to pull user list from server and getting the following error message: "You cannot view the list of users at this time. Please try again later." All network settings have been double checked for correctness and browsing the Network Neighborhood works just fine. Any ideas ??????

The solution has nothing to do with the setup of file and print sharing, rather, it has to do with a problem caused by Outlook Express. This may solve your problem:

1. Close all mail programs running. Better yet, reboot your system. Make sure, if your using Outlook 98/2000 or Windows Messaging that it does not start after a reboot. Check the startup folder.

2. Open Outlook Express.

3. On the Tools menu, click Options.

4. On the General tab, and clear the check box for "Make Outlook Express my default Simple MAPI client", and click Apply.

5. Click OK.

After the reboot, you should be able to retrieve the list of users.

Hope this helps.
