File Corruption in OS (W2K)

By TheRook ·
I have some computers in my office that my lead would like me to troubleshoot to see what's wrong with them, as we got pretty busy and forgot what the problem is with each (good learning experience for me, though, i guess).

On one box, upon booting, when W2k is starting, it stops, and i get the following error msg:

W2K could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Is reloading the OS the solution?

File Corruption in OS (W2K)

First try booting from the Windows 2000 install CD

There will be a menu allowing you to try and fix the OS.

It would be good if you have an Emergency Repair disk for this computer.

If not you can try and to the Repair without it.

I always do this 1st to fix a Win2K boot problem.

Read this Technet article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269075

It tells you all the steps you can try to repair the Registry to fix this error.

You might need a copy of NTFSDOS for some of the options.
