File endings in XP

By jon_w31 ·
In windows 98 windows explorer I could see the file extension listed and change it if I wished eg. ****.exe could be changed to ****.txt
In windows XP I cannot see the file extension so I cannot change it.
I want to send an .exe as something elso to bypass outlook security settings on email atatchments.
How can I make visible and change the file extension?

In Windows Explorer go to Tools>Folder Options.
Select the View tab
Remove the check mark from "Hide extensions for known file types"
