Files & Folders Protection

By sunnycom ·
How can I protect my personal files & folders being assessed by others when
there are many people using the same PC.

May I protect my folders through password?

Thanks

If you're using NT, you can restrict access to your own user account (make sure that nobody else has your password). If you're on a network, store your files in your personal folder (if you have one). If not either of the above, you're kinda screwed...

MCSE Lee is right for NT, however, even with NT, someone with Administrator Privilege can "Take Ownership" of your files and then read them.

Another option is to use an encryption program to encrypt the files. There are a number of shareware programs available that will do it. You might check under the download section here or at www.download.com.

Yet a thrid option is to find a storage space on-line (pick a place like netcolony or GeoCities to store stuff or a more secure file storage service). Or find a hihg-capacity storage device (LS-120 disk or zip disk) and leave your files there.

Hopefully you are using a system that provides "real" protection such as Linux or Windows NT. If you're on a Win95 or Win98 machine that's being shared, you have a couple of options. One, like suggested in an earlier post, store your personal information on a network server if possible. Another choice is to us a package like WinZip that allows you to password protect files. Main problem with this option is that it is somewhat inconvient to access your files.

If you're using a shared PC, then the best advice already given would be to store your files on a removable disk (zip or floppy). Any PC user (hacker) worth their salt can even use some Norton utilities to get at your files, even on NT.
