Files remain open even after logoff

By tomecole ·
I have a Win2K Small Business Server running SP3.

I am having a problem whereby when my users open files ( mostly Excel spreadsheets, but it happens with other data files also), then finish and exit the program properly ( some even log off the domain), the files remain in an Open state. I can see the status as Open when viewed using the Computer Management applet. The users will get an error saying the file is already open and they can only open a "read only" copy.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When you open an existing file, whether is .doc, xls, rtf... you will see that in the same location where the file is opened another temp file (with funny caracters) is created meant to update any information you may add or take from that file.

If for whatever reason the computer from the person that first opened that file crashes or performs any illegal operation that prevents from the file being saved and/or closed correctly, this temp file remais open. Thus if someone tries to open againfrom whatever client machine, because that temp file still lies in the same locations as the original file, the program assumes that is being used by another person, therefore you will not be able to use or open that original file.

This may be caused for different reasons, including the SP that your machine may be using. But like most things in the computer world mistakes are made by the humans"!

Thanks, but as I stated, they are exiting properly, and even logging off. I have had such a problem with this that I stand there and watch them to make sure they are exiting correctly.

We are having the same problem at our company. We have XP workstations and Microsofts solution was to upgrade them to SP1. We are currently in the middle of doing this.

Did your users close the files before they logged off, also you have to make an Auto file closer that closes the file after certain parameters are met and while the 'abandoned' File is there it is available to any browser 'cuz it is out side the operating sphere though it is inside the envelope and totally uprotected by any security what-so-ever most times.

....I see what you are saying,....It actually happened the same thing to me!

What OS do you use for your Server and what are the OS for your client machines?

This is probably caused by te type of restrictions you give you "User Group". Try having a look at the settings - and see how they can access the files over the network - sometimes the Server machine configures the client accesses with a few extra security restrictions to protect the data.

Do a few test with a single computer and if it solves the problem,....BINGO"!
