Looks like you are waiting until the last minute to take care of some expensive things. I recommend that you head off to Norton’s web site. I believe thay have a download that checks your bios for you. I know that you can run to your local PC store and buy it, but I have a sneaken suspition that it is free on the net.

This shouldn’t be the only thing that you check though, there are a number of software programs that you might want to check also.

      good luck

If it was manufactured in 96, it should be. Check your bootup screen to see what bios you have.

Find the manufacture on the web, they will have instructions to help you find out more about your bios.

At http://www.unicore.com you will find the phenix, Award AMI and 1 or 2 more, they now own these and can provide you with the info you need and or a upgrade.

To check your software go to the manufactures web page, Microsoft has a program that you can use to check all of there products with. If you don’t do any critical data anaylizing that pertains to dates, then software is not a big issue.

When you computer boots up, the bios version and code is displayed usually in the bottom of your screen. You can wreite this down and then go to the bios manufacturer and look up this code. This might tell you what you want to know. Also, mosy systems built after the 92-94 time frame should be compliant.

There are several different Y2K programs that you can download that when booted from a diskette will check your bios and real time clock, and actually simulate year end rollovers and leap year rollovers for the next 5 to 10 years. You can go to http://WWW.Y2K.com and be able to get a free download there.

NSTL, a company that does Windows compatability testing for software manufacturers, makes a freeware program that tests your computer hardware for Y2K compliance. It will test if your computer can retain years past 1999, as well as rollover tests for the year 2000, and leap years after the year 2000. It can be downloaded by executing the following URL: “www.nstl.com/downloads/y2000.exe”.

Several good answers on how to check for Y2K Compatibility, but what to do if it’s not? Open the case, and look on the MB for the manufacturer and model. Go to their Website and see if a Flash Update is avaailable; if so, download it and follow the directions CAREFULLY!! If you cannot update the system, then buy a new MB (with processor – might as well upgrade as much as possible), or just get a whole new system. Or… there are add-in cards available for $50-60 that will override the internal clock, and provide Y2K Compatibility, but I would rely on these as a short term fix only.

One of the easiest ways to check is to
      simulate the date rollover yourself.
      Shut down to MS-DOS mode
Set the date to 12-31-99 by typing DATE
      (or ‘DATE 12-31-99’)
Set the time to 11:58PM using TIME
      (or TIME 11:58P)
Turn the computer off and wait more than 2 minutes. Turn the computer on.
Check the date/time in Windows or Dos
If it is 01-01-2000 your BIOS is Y2K OK.
If it is 01-01-1980 it is not Y2K OK.
*but you may be able to set the date to
01-01-2000 and the BIOS will retain it.
      Simple but it works.

Go to http://www.symantec.com. Follow the leads to Y2K. There is a free download there to both test and fix your PC for the rollover problem. It is called Netbios text/fix. I have used this fix without incident. Also, check the date format under controlpanel/regional settings, date tab and make sure that it is set for a 4 digit date.

I am not sure if you still need this but I have a program that I downloaded from the internet. I do not remember the site address but it is a free utility. I used it with my consulting work on over 20 computer systems and the accuracy was 100% E-mail me if you want it…I will send it VIA e-mail. It is very small.

Even though the New Year is already here, the best thing to do is to go to the website of the manufacturer and find the most up to date bios. I would recommend to go on and flash the new bios even if the computer is Y2K compliant. If it doesn’t help you with this matter, it will probably help you in some other aspect. You can only benefit from it.

umm….. go to the manufacture website download any and all updates, flash the bios in a consecutive order (v1.3 then 1.4 then 1.5) power down for atleast 30secs after each and start up again when complete there are simulators like ones provided by norton, you can find others by searching on line like “y2k bios checks” in yahoo or what ever or if your feeling daring set the bios to something like 3 mins before to hour and when it hits 2000 and your still looking at you bios setup screen, then congrats your computer is complyant. (for the most part)

      Hi,
Just look @ your screen when it’s booting, if it’s a AMIBIOS you can go to http://www.amibios.com they take care of american megatrend motherboard BIOS, if it’s some one else just search the net you shall find your Y2K BIOS update.
P.S All software for BIOS check is REAL DOS MODE, don’t attempt to install with Windows 9x running.
