Floppy Drive and Scanner

By john.cb1 ·
When I shutdown Windows Xp my floppy drive green light comes on as if it is coming on. When I open windows my floppy drive green light comes on as if it is looking for a disk and my scanner comes on as if it is staring to scan.

Can anyone tell me how to stop these?

I have tried this:

To disable startup programs:
click start>run... Enter msconfig.

In the new window, click the Startup tab. You should get a list of all programs that are starting up when you PC boots. Uncheck them one at a time until you find the culprit

But still did not stop the scanner from Starting.

I Also tried this:

If the scanner is started via the start menu, go to Start-->Programs-->Start-up. There you'll find the programs windows loads with starts. Just right-click on the scanner menu option and select delete.
If it's not there, you must open the scanner software, and in option/preferences disable the option where it says it will start with windows.

For the floppy drive, it could be the antivirus software. See if you can find and disable an option that makes the antivirus program search the floppy drive when you shut down windows.

But still the scanner did not stop, where in the anti virus software can i stop the floppy starting, i have Nortons Anto Virus 2004.

Does anyone have any more ideas, and can you explain them in more detail as i am just a beginner in Computers.

John,

What make and model scanner?
How does it connect to the PC?

If this is a USB scanner, the lamp coming on at startup may be 'normal' as the USB port comes to life, and the connected hardware is checked to see what is there.

Some scanners by default turn on the lamp when power is applied and do not turn the lamp off until instructed to do so by the software.

As to the floppy scan, you need to look through the NAV settings and options.

I run McAfee, so I can't give you a step by step for Norton.

Based on the input from above (TheChas), it is true that some scanners light up when the pc starts. I have a Visioneer that does that (not anymore because I gave it away, but it used to...). The reason why is because Visioneer software was installed in the Startup folder and also within the registry Run key. So everytime my machine booted, it physically performed a search to see if the scanner was present or not.

As far as the other stuff goes, it could be a lot of things within Windows calling your floppy. I'd download some software that gets rid of the MRU's and see what happens. Windows is trying to perform a read/write operation to that drive for some odd reason and it just needs to be cleared. The MRU software usually kills all of your Most Recently Used options and I am thinking that Windows is stuck on something that used the floppy at one point in time and just has not let it go.

Hope that helps and sorry if I restated something from above, I did not read through all the help from the other folks (sorry), just had to put in my 2 cents..

Good luck..

I think we should all take a step back for a second. It is possible we are looking too much into this. In my experience with every MS OS, and PC, when you first turn the pc on, the Floppy is checked by bios for a floppy disk, that is normal. When you shutdown your pc, for some odd reason, even without an antivirus program running, the floppy is usually checked. It is more prominent in pcs with an antivirus program running. Some antivirus's won't let you shutdown with a floppy in your drive. As far as the scanner goes, if its USB, it will light up as the usb ports are scanned for hardware. If its LPT/parallel, it will light up as the software verifies it has connectivity to the scanner. I don't think either of these things are issues or something bad, just normal startup and shutdown things that happen.
