Floppy drive running

By chadadams ·
Has anyone seen this one before? I had a machine with Windows2000 running fine and happily along, when, about a month ago, the floppy drive starts running as if it is seeking something. This only seems to occur when the machine is left alone for some time and usually stops when the user pushes and keys on the keyboard. Basically, it seems to occur at times of inactivity. Any ideas???

I only saw this once, and it was due to the virus protection being set to scan "My Computer" instead of the physical hard drives. This was random, not when the user was pressing keys.

Well, I have seen "versions" of the same thing before, the phantom A drive just running cause it feels like it! There are a couple of reasons. You probably are not going to like any of them! First check for a boot sector virus and get rid of all old floppy's (which may contain the virus), then you may want to go into the setup and see what drive you have the computer booting to first, and you may consider changing the bootup order. You didn't say whether you had maybe installed a new prog or some new piece of equipment? Try to think back on when it started happening...what floppy's did you use, or what email did you open or what new prog or equipment did you install? Hope this helps!

Recently had the FDC go out on the MoBo, which caused the light to stay on all the time. Sounds as if your FDC may be on the verge of death. To verify it, pick up a Floppy Disk Controller Card, either ISA or PCI, depending on the MB, plug it in, hook up your floppy to it, and see if your problem goes away. Go to somebody like Compgeeks.com, or other used parts houses, and you can probably pick one up for a couple of dollars. I found mine at www.southpacificsystems.com for $1.95. If you buy it new(if you can even find a new one), it will probably run $40-50 range. Good luck.
