    Folder accessing

    Locked

    by pmidnite ·

We are constantly accessing folders on the file server via our WAN. Each remote site has direct access to the file servers and each site has dedicated T1 lines. Each user accessing the dual xeon processor file server is using windows xp(sp2). It is very slow in responding when the remote users start accessing folders that may be 3 or 4 layers deep. I have tried to turn off XP’s firewall but that did not speed up the results. I have disabled any virus-checking software just for Test purposes on any file/folder. Made no difference.
ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD GREATLY BE CONSIDERED. There must be medium-large organizations doing this also. Wondered what they are using…..Thanks in advance..

Whats the bandwidth utilization on the T1? a 90% utilized T1 is gonna be slow. How many concurrent connections are made at any given time over the T1 for file access?

A dedicated T1 is fast but if its 90% utilized and you start loading on top of it, its gonna get slow

are you using a 100mbs hub/switch/router ? to connect to the server??? // why are you using XP?? try linux or windows server system.. they handle things like remote connections much better..

why kind of files are you accessing?? how many people are accessing files at one time???

have you had your users PING the server and see the responce time??

and why are you using WAN to transpher files.. are they far away??

these are some things you may want to check out..

Are they accessing the folders by browsing the network or using a mapped drive letter? Although mapped drives have their problems (vulnerabilities to spreading viruses is one), accessing resources remotely using a drive mapping is generally much faster than browsing a shared resource on the network…Just a suggestion.

      Hope this helps!

I had this same issue but on a LAN and it seem to help out tremendously , I hope it helps you!

“Open up the Registry and go to :
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace
Under that branch, select the key :
      {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
      and delete it.
This is key that instructs Windows to search for Scheduled Tasks. If you like you may want to export the exact branch so that you can restore the key if necessary.
This fix is so effective that it doesn’t require a reboot and you can almost immediately determine yourself how much it speeds up your browsing processes.”

Remember you are accessing the registry make sure to export and backup before doing anything, and if you are not comfortable with the registry leave it alone 🙂
