Folder name change during Win2k upgrade

By lostmage ·
When upgrading from Win 98 to Win 2k, the WINDOWS folder doesn't always change to WINNT. Why is that? Will it cause any problems in the long run? Is there a way to go back and change the folder name if needed?

Folder name change during Win2k upgrade

The Win98 folder, by default, is c:\Windows. The Win2000 folder, by default, is c:\winnt.

An "upgrade" should look at the OS currently on the system and upgrade the OS to the newer version. Generally an "upgrade" should not touch the originalfolder (just the files/folders within) that the original OS was installed to -- because it's an upgrade -- not a clean install.

It should not cause any problems because your registry should also have been upgraded and all your standard folders inthe registry will have a path of c:\windows (even though it is win2000). Some people do change the default path of windows anyway (for security).

The only way to go back and change the folder name is to wipe the hdd and do a clean install. You should not need to do this unless you are having other problems with the software (or hardware if your hdd crashes).

Folder name change during Win2k upgrade

If you are upgrading from a previous OS to w2k then the w2k install will use the previous folder name. Since most of the system information is in the registry now you cannot rename the folder to winnt and expect the system to work correctly.

If you do a fresh install then the default OS folder will be winnt.

There shouldn't be any problems with w2k in the "windows" directory versus the "winnt" directory. The registry entries will point to the correct install directory no matter what it is.

Enjoy,
