Hello,
How can I force windows xp users to close open files and logoff at say 7:00pm so the backup can run?

Go into active directory and right click on the user name goto properties and look thru the tabs and find the one that sets a time on logon and logoff. i.e. from 6:00am to 7:00pm this should help you out.

You will need to set logon hours in AD user properties as previous answer suggested. But this will not disconnect the session. It will only prevent new sessions from starting.
You next need to apply a Group policy with the following.
Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security options/Network security:Force logoff when logon hours expire.

This should now forcably disconnect all users who have logon hours specified.
There is another key in the same folder which looks to do a similar thing but is labeled "Microsoft Network server:Disconnect clients when Logon hours expire." This may be worth trying as well.
Hope this has been of help

Andy
